· Establishment: The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Centre under Institute of Geophysics was established by the Decision No 1798/QD-KHCNVN of the President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, September 4, 2007.
· Functions: To utilize the results of investigation and research in the field of Physics of the Earth for earthquake information and tsunami warning in Vietnam in accordance with the governmental regulations.
· Tasks:
- Observation of earthquake data, acquisition of sea level and other related information and data in the territory and sea areas of Vietnam.
- Analyzing, processing, controlling and verifying data and information on earthquakes and tsunamis in the territory, sea areas of Vietnam and adjacent regions.
- Issuing earthquakes and tsunamis warning bulletins in accordance with the governmental regulations.
- Cooperation with earthquake information and tsunami warning systems in the region and the World.
- To carry out training and propaganda activities, to provide community with knowledge and guideline for earthquake and tsunami preparedness and prevention.
- International cooperation:
Representing Vietnam as one of the member states of the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (PTWS), the EITWC plays a role of a National Tsunami Warning Center in the system and has designated Tsunami National Contact and Tsunami Focal Points for receiving information on regional tsunami mitigation activities and tsunami alerts or advisories from the international tsunami centres PTWC and JMA.

Function and task
- Managing, operating and developing National seismic network.
- Conducting basic and applied researches for fast and accurately collecting data.
- Researching characteristic of wave propagation and strong ground motion in Vietnam and adjacent area for studying deep structure and seismic hazard assessment.
Network system
Instruments
- 9 short period of 1s, 1 component sensors.
- 14 short period of 1s, 3 component sensors.
- 5 broadband sensors 120s-50Hz, going to add 20 sensors more.
Seismic networks
- Telemetry network for observing earthquake surround Hanoi and adjacent area.
- Short period network for observing earthquake in Vietnam and adjacent area. It is distributed on whole Vietnam, and mostly concentrate in Northern Vietnam.
- Broadband seismic network is in project ”Strengthening seismic network for earthquake information and tsunami warning in Vietnam”, including 25 broadband seismic stations. 5 stations have installed, the rest are going to be installed in coming time.
International cooperation
- Cooperating with Institute of Earth Sciences, Academia Sinica, Taiwan to deploy 25 broadband seismic stations for studying wave propagation characteristic, deep structure and seismic hazard assessment in Vietnam.
- Cooperating with National Central University, Taiwan for studying site effects in seismic hazard assessment.
- Cooperating with National Taiwan University in seismological research and education.
- Cooperating with University of Tokyo and Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) to deploy 3 broadband seismic stations for studying deep structure in Vietnam.
- Cooperating with Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) and Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (RIMES) to deploy 2 broadband seismic stations to exchange information in order for earthquake information and tsunami warning in Vietnam.
Human resource
- In office: 2 Ph.D., 1 Ph.D. student, 2 Masters and 9 Bachelors.
- In stations: 7 official technical and 30 temporary contracts.
Project and publication
- Presiding and joining 3 National projects, 2 projects from National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED) and many other projects.
- Published 4 SCI papers, 8 papers in National major journals and many papers in National and International major conferences.

Function and Task
The Department of Geomagnetism is a research unit of the Institute of Geophysics, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. It has the following main tasks:
+ Carrying out the observations and fundamental investigations on
Geomagnetism and Ionosphere. Management of the national magnetic – ionospheric observatories and repetition station network;
+ Study of the characteristics of distribution and time variations on the territory of Vietnam in order to serve the demands of economy, science, technology and national defense;
+ Study of the ionosphere in order to serve the radio propagation;
+ Application of the geophysical methods (magnetic, magneto-telluric sounding , GPS technology …) in the prospect and sounding of the deep geological structure, tectonic, ionosphere and mineral resources;
+ Study of the magnetic environnement, the impacts of the magnetic storms on the technological systems and the human lifes;
+ Paleomagnetic study for tectonic interpretation; study of the magnetic susceptibility on the marine sedimentary rocks for determining the stratigraphic boundaries, chronocorrelations; study of the paleoclimatic changes periods and sedimentary accumulations;
+ Postgraduate training for Ph. D in the fields of Geomagnetism - Ionosphere.
Human Resource
Until today (01 Oct., 2012), the Department of Geomagnetism includes 11 research staffs, among them are one Ass. Professor, three Doctors, three MSc, and four BSc, engineers.

The Department of Geomagnetism has the following main facilities:
+National magnetic – ionospheric system consists of 4 observatories: PMO Phu Thuy, Bac Lieu, Chapa, Da Lat;
+ Digital magnetometer FRG-601, Japan, installed at Bac Lieu observatory;
+ Digital magnetometer GEOMAG, France, installed at PMO Phu Thuy and Da Lat observatories, including: Scalar magnetometer SM 100, Vectorial magnetometer VM390, recorder ENOII, Fluxgate magnetometer DI-MAG 9302, Geometric proton magnetometer;
+ Ionosonde SKI-02098A and antenna HR 230-1c, Japan, installed at the Bac Lieu Equatorial Observatory;
+ Ionosonde SKI-02098, Japan, installed at Phu Thuy Observatory;
+ Magneto-telluric equipment, France;
+ Scintrex proton magnetometer GSM 9, Canada;
+ Envi Mag Scintrex magnetometer, Canada;
+ Envi Grad Scintrex magnetometer, Canada;
+ Bartington Fluxgate magnetometer, England;
+ 3 continuous GPS receivers at Hanoi, Hue, Ho Chi Minh city;

Scientific Achievements
+ During 30 years from establishment, the department of Geomagnetism has presided and accomplished 34 projects of State level (including those of national fundamental research), 11 projects of ministry level, hundreds of projects of Institute of Geophysics level, tens of applied geophysics contracts. At present, the department of Geomagnetism presides 02 national fundamental research projects, fundded by the NAFOSTED (National Foundation for science and technology development).
+ During the recent 30 years, the department of Geomagnetism has publicated more than 200 valuable scientific articles in the various prestigious journals in Vietnam or in the world, as well as in the proceedings of the big international workshops, in which there are more than 30 articles in the ISI journals.
Collaborations in Scientific Investigation and Research
+ In Vietnam, the department of Geomagnetism has a strong and effective attachment to the other departments in the Institute of Geophysics, as well as to the Institute of Geological Sciences, Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics, Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources, Geophysical Division, Vietnam Electricity, Petrovietnam, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environnement, University of Mining and Geology, Hanoi University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
International Cooperations
During the 30 recent years, the department of Geomagnetism has fulfilled about 30 international projects with various institutes, Universities at many countries in the world, as Poland, Russian Federation, French Republic, Japan, United States of America, Germany…
